Tips for Low-Budget Fun at Yosemite

OK, so you want to go skating in Yosemite, but you are on a limited budget. What can you do? Here are some tips for conserving money:

  • Bring your own food. Food is expensive in Yosemite. There is a store in Yosemite Village where you can buy supplies, but they will cost less outside Yosemite. There is also an ATM in the village.

  • Bring along friends and stay together. Adding more people to rooms and cabins costs only a little more.

  • Camp. Camping costs the least. It is car-camping unless you stay in the Sunnyside Walk-in campground near the lodge.

  • There is a $5 entry fee to get into the park in a car. On a bus or bicycle it costs $3. It used to be that if you came in and left the park after-hours (or before-hours), you could cheat and avoid this fee. They do check when you leave, if you get caught on the way out you'll still have to pay. If you plan to visit the park a few times a year, and if you enjoy National Parks, you might want to pick up a Golden Eagle Pass for $50, which gives you a year's free entrance to all U.S. National Parks.
