• Fences and gates can be made from horizontal slats or vertical pickets.
  • The slats or pickets can overlap or be next to each other, or even have a gap between them.
  • The wood can be rough or smooth.
  • The fence might be on a shallow slope and be stair stepped or sloped.
  • Driveway gates are often two gates that meet in the middle
  • Cladded fences and gates are built on existing cyclone fence and steel poles
  • Three and Four layer fences look the same from both sides - they are also called “Good Neighbor Fences”

Flying Buttress Fence, Rough wood

When there is plumbing right under the fence line, I put the posts a couple feet to the side and support the fence on the fence line. Also, in this case the fence line diverted around a large tree.

Simple Fence, Rough wood

There was no way to put a fence post into the ground for the next to last post in the fence because of tree roots. It would have harmed the tree to dig a hole there deeper than 8”. So I built a form and put a concrete block there with a post base in it to support the last post.

End Cap, Rough wood

This is an end cap - it covers the gap between the fence and the house. It was built to help keep my client’s dog in their back yard.
Notice the polyurethane post base? It can be cut to shape easily.

Stairstep fence on hill with large top rail

I reused the post bases and a few of the posts when I built these fence sections. The top rail is a 2x6 cut to overlap at the end of each section. I built a new retaining wall in each section of the fence. This kind of project is among the most difficult to execute, not least because all tools and materials must be hauled up or down a hill.
